There is no necessary disjunction between being a so-called academic theologian and a pastor (evangelist, whatever). In fact, for me I donβt really recognize the academic casting. Surely, there are academic theologians (for whom the doing of theology can be purely reduced down to an intellectualist ejaculation). But that makes no sense to me, categorically. I have βbecome a theologianβ not for intellectual reasons, per se, but doxological ones. Being a worshipper of the triune God entails the whole life, the whole being of a person. As such, at least in my disposition, βbeing academicβ can never eclipse being a worshipper (and witnesser) of the triune God in Christ. It is an organic unfolding, at least for me, of how best worshipping God gets expressed; through inhabiting Scripture, and all of its entailments. And this includes, right at the center, being studiosis. Muslims refer to Christians as people of the Book, and this for a reason.
