Patristic Trinitarianism

*Repost

I have recently been involved in two separate discussions having to do with the centrality of the Trinity to a Christian doctrine of God, here and here; so I was just thinking how co-incidental it is that I am currently reading T. F. Torrance’s “The Trinitarian Faith” (which is very similar to his “The Christian Doctrine of God, One Being Three Persons,” which I read a few years ago now – I must say, I think I actually like The Trinitarian Faith a bit more than The Christian Doctrine of God; which is hard to gauge, because I think The Christian Doctrine of God is one of the best books I’ve ever read on the Trinity πŸ˜‰ ). As I’ve been reading, I just came across a cool quote that Torrance has provided made by Epiphanius (a Patristic):

God is one, the Father in the Son, the Son in the Father with the Holy Spirit . . . true enhypostatic Father, and true enhypostatic Son, and true enhypostatic Holy Spirit, three Persons, one Godhead, one being, one glory, one God. In thinking of God you conceive of the Trinity, but without confusing in your mind the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Father is the Father, the Son is the Son, the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit, but there is no deviation in the Trinity from oneness and identity. (Epiphanius, “Anc., 10,” cited by T. F. Torrance, “The Trinitarian Faith,” 234-35)

Good stuff!

  1. Bobby,

I have a first edition hardback of TFT’s: The Trinitarian Faith, it is T.&T. Clark (1988). Btw, the hardback has a color Icon of Saint Athanasius, with The Niceno-Constantinopolitab Creed on the back, in the front of the book. It is TFT’s best book certainly! (Btw, I also have a new paper-back of the same, but it does not have the Icon or the Creed)
