The "Chief End of Man" . . .

The Westminster shorter catechism says this about man’s ultimate purpose

Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God,[1] and to enjoy him forever.[2]

Jesus says the chief end of man is:

“. . . Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38. This is the first and greatest commandment. 39. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” ~Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus reorientates the duty driven “law” based approach to spirituality that Westminster want’s to endorse. The chief end of man is to love God out of the love of Christ shed abroad in hearts by the Holy Spirit. For Westminster to glorify God is to “law-keep.” Two different approaches, which do you prefer?
