We are in a spiritual battle. If we donβt think in these terms we have already lost. We are born into a great spiritual battle. The whole Bible is dripping with this reality. Whether it be the Old Testament, and the battles of the nations against the covenant nation of God; whether it be Jesus coming and dying on the cross; whether it be the Apostles being martyred; whether it be Paulβs point about us being in a battle against the principalities and powers; we are in a damn battle!! Christians of all people ought to be able to recognize this. But here in the Western world most of us Christians are consumed by consumerism; we are consumed by creature comforts; we wouldnβt be able to recognize that we were in a battle even if the devil himself bit us on our asses. The Patristic church understood that we are in a battle; they labeled the church here, the church militant, and the church absent from the body present with the Lord, as the church triumphant. The early church martyrs recognized that they were in a battle, and they didnβt submit to the evils and darkness of this world system to the point of being shred to pieces by starving tigers, lions, and the tip of the Romanβs sword. Christians need to wake up!
There is a battle of darkness versus light right in front of our faces right now. But we have collectively submitted to our desire for peace and safety, and consigned our power as the people of God, and as a mass of people in general, to a small cabal of evil overmasters; overmasters possessed by the power of the Beast himself. If youβre still thinking myopically and in terms of Trump as some form of Hitler, youβre only illustrating how you have submitted to a lie. Trump is not the Savior, he is not the answer: Jesus is. But if you are only focused on him then that is to your demise, and to the rest of our demise. What Trump, as a figurehead is up against is the globalist evil that uses your health and mine against us. They create pandemics and diseases in order to create vaccines that are worse than the diseases they claim to be healing people of.
My only point with this post is to rant and vent. I simply cannot believe the utter foolishness and empty-headedness and laziness mainstreamed Christians are willing to live with (this applies to most evangelicals too). People donβt put in the work. People donβt even read their Bibles (so much for the Bible in the vernacular β¦ thanks, Luther, but no thanks). Anyway, I am totally pissed. People are dying because most people are lazy and unwilling to fight this world system. This world system is the Beast that the book of Revelation refers to. Christians fight this system through the blood of Jesus and the proclamation of their testimony as that bears witness to Him. This means that the Gospel is all encompassing, and involves all-truth. We as Christians are to expose the darkness with the light of Christ. But if we have conflated the darkness with the light we have already lost the battle. To me it seems as if the church has lost her witness because she is simply part of the Beastly system and cannot make a distinction between the two. We arenβt even trying; thatβs the demonic thing of it. /rant over
Disciples are to be fit for the purpose of walking after Jesus, and this is precisely where the body is proven to have lost its fitness. We are in warfare, although I don’t think our principal purpose is that of fighting; rather our principal function is to embody the reality of the renewed creation, the kingdom of God. This involves living, speaking, proclaiming and being that renewed creation as we walk in following Jesus, our King. Theology provides us with that we need to sort out what is of culture only, and what is genuinely of the gospel. The problem is that the body is so unfit it yields itself to the lure of the culture and is unable to discern the truly good news that also demands self-sacrifice and discipline to maintain. Disciples demonstrate fitness for their purpose not when they can fight for the kingdom’s survival, but rather when with every fiber of their being they bear witness, living according to the reality of its arrival.
P.S. Rant so taken… and also so felt.
Yes, but Iβm not not saying that. That said, we are in a battle, and we are to fightβI see no other way to express that, and neither do Peter or Paul. The weapons of our warfare are mighty in God for pulling down every stronghold that would attempt to exalt itself over the knowledge of God. And so, in the details, the battle is real; we are fighting indeed; we are fighting the world the flesh and devil. We do all these things not simply by βbearing witness,β which is a consequence, but we engage in mortification, prayer, scripture meditation, fellowship etc. But we identify actual areas that must be fought against, we are not ignorant of the enemyβs devices. The idea of βbearing witness,β while a broad and real and central category, is entailed by a variety of particulars in the Christian life; one of which is battling the darkness w/ the light. And yes, in this their is witness bearing; but this is a concrete activity with real referents that involve battling things out in and through the victory of Jesus Christ for us.
Well put, Bobby! (We do indeed battle for the same things by the same reality.) Your response clearly specifies several of the particular realities and concrete activities of our warfare and directs a reasonable and true testimony against “the utter foolishness, empty-headedness and laziness” that belies the victory of Christ. (May the “agitators” and “provocateurs” consider the terrible cost!)
I agree with you that we’re in a battle. I’m curious about your thoughts as to what ways in our day to day lives we might “take up arms” and fight? There is guidance in the scripture about putting on the armor of God but I often wonder what actions, if any, should be taken to facilitate this. Is it just a matter of being psychologically prepared or will there come a time when believers will actually be called to take action and what might those actions be in the context of a spiritual battle?
@Richard, thank you.
@Rian, hang on and I’ll get back tomorrow. Welcome to the blog π
