I just had a good conversation with my wife about the importance of God’s Word, scripture! We talked about the power of God’s Word, and how it transports us into the reality of God’s life in Christ. How we are taken up into a realm of reality, in Christ, that nothing else in this world can achieve … including all of the theologians added together. There is something special about Scripture that has real life power to set the captives free, and bring us out of ourΒ doldrumsΒ into the majestic life of God. So our discussion progressed; the enemy of our souls, just as he did with Eve and Adam, will do whatever it takes to introduce doubt into our lives about the sufficiency and reliability of God’s Word to us in Scripture. He will use good intentions, good theologians, overwhelming life circumstances, or whatever tactic he thinks will do the job. Once God’s Word is doubted the floodgates of hell have no end in a person’s life. I think this “doubting” is much much more subtle than we realize, and so God’s answer to this doubt was to send the Word (Jn 1.1) into our stead, and provide us with His belief and trust in God’s Word, by bringing us into union and communion with him as the Word of God for us. The ground of our lives is now founded in the Word of God; the enemy of our souls can try and cast doubt on this, but he has failed because the Word has already prevailed! God has seen fit to privilege the Scriptures with a special power that comes from its reality in its witness bearing capacity to the Word of God in Christ. This is the special power that stands behind the written Words of God, and this is why the enemy of our souls would cast doubt upon the written Word of God; he knows that God has ordained the Scriptures as the place that we encounter the reality to which it has been deemed to bear witness. As Moses wrote, “it is not a vain thing, but it is our life.”
