Happy Reformation Day! If it wasn’t for Luther we wouldn’t have the Bible in the vernacular (English for me). If it wasn’t for Luther we wouldn’t have Calvin. If it wasn’t for Luther we might not be Americans. If it wasn’t for Jesus there wouldn’t be a Luther.
Happy Reformation Day!!!
There’s a lot we could blame Luther for, but you being an American is not one of them π Happy Reformation Day mate.
Angela,
You too!
Jason,
I was thinking of the movement that Luther helped to instigate; w/o him there would have been no Puritans and Pilgrims (or Protestants) to flee to America. I have ancestors who were both Puritans and Quakers who came to America from England. Happy Reformation day!
I understood the trajectory of your logic, just thought it sounded odd. BTW: your vote of thanks for a ‘Bible in the vernacular’ ought to go not to Luther but to Hus and Tyndale.
Jason,
I think we can still thank Luther too. Tyndale and Hus didn’t get quite as “popular” as Luther. But while we’re at it, why not throw in Lorenzo Valla and the whole ad fontes Christian humanist movement. π I was just singling out Luther, yesterday, because of the day.
The Luther America thing was really just noting the ground-shaking pivotal nature of what happened with the Protestant movement within Luther’s hands. He was pivotal, and I wouldn’t be a Protestant (at least not in its shape now), nor American (most likely) if not for the Protestant Reformation. Of course all of this is really just presuming from silence; so I can see the oddity of it. That’s what you get from someone who is in the middle of a 12.5 hr shift, and a stream of consciousness reflection π .
