confessions from an Evangelical Calvinist

I think it is time for a little transparency (I’m not really ‘EC’, I’m actually a Lutheran trying to subvert the classic Calvinist premise by smoke and mirrors . . . just kidding πŸ˜‰ , I’m ‘EC’).

Seriously, I wanted to apologize for my approach. Often if folks disagree with me or press me with points that I perceive are intended to engage in ‘ad hoc’ arguement or actually come with actual force (that catches me off guard); I tend to come off to0 strongly, or with “in-your-face” style that really is not consistent with what I think is “above reproach” or fitting for a blog that is really seeking toΒ promote the love of Christ. I often drop things out of thin air, it would appear, that really requires much more development and argument; before I take on a “triumphalist” mantle that counts all others wrong before we ever getΒ out of the gate. I think that IΒ imply that I think that what I often call “Classic Calvinism” represents a sub-Christian belief that impugns folks who fit this category in such a way that it may appear that I do not believe that these people are even “saved” or well-intentioned (I don’t believe this at all).

I would like to ask for forgiveness if I have offended you through any of the ways that I just mentioned. I don’t want to be a bully, I don’t want to be a jerk, I don’t want to be Calvin’s “rascal.” What I really want to be is a loving Christian brother who is growing along, with you, in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ! I want people to feel free to challenge, respond to, or just say nothing here at the blog. I definitely don’t have what we are calling ‘EC’ all figured out, at all! In fact part of the purpose of this blog is for me to throw stuff out as I am confronted with new and exciting things in my own readings in this area. I don’t claim to be an “expert” on any of this, just a humble viator (although not salvifically or technically understood) along with the rest of you; as we all seek (no matter which direction we’re coming at all of this through, theologically) to know Jesus, and make Him known, better.

I realize this is just a blog, but it is a helpful medium, in many ways, to connect with other believers (and even non-believers) from all over this globe. It is good for all kinds of things. I get to write a book with an awesome guy (and many awesome contributors), because of the blog; I get to do a PhD in theology with some awesome people, because of this blog; I had an army of Christian soldiers behind me and my family — as we walked through cancer last year, (in many respects) because of this blog; I have met Christians from all kinds of backgrounds, regions, countries, theological persuasions, because of this blog. The Lord has really given, through the blog. I don’t want to take that away by a bad attitude, or because I’m feeling abrupt or argumentative “that particular day.”

So, as I confess, a little; I also just wanted to say thank you to all of you who have read here, and continue to read here. I hope that you will all stay around, interact and engage with the ideas being presented here! I will seek, in line with what I am saying here, to be more mature in my future blogging; to be more careful, and less presumptuous in my future endeavor. The only reason I am confessing, is because the Holy Spirit won’t leave me alone on this πŸ˜‰ . . . didn’t that great “Classic Calvinist” call Him the ‘hound of heaven’?

  1. I share your sentiment Bobby.

Don’t get to the computer much lately, and when I do, I’m not logged in, so I don’t usually comment. But I continue to mull over what you say. (much of it is over the “simple guy’s” head though. 8)

  2. Craig,

Great to hear from you! I’m glad you’re still out there, and I hope all is well. I’m just a simple guy too πŸ™‚ .

  3. Bobby,

Well keep up the good work then simple guy. I realize that posts like yours take a lot of work, and I appreciate the effort you put into our edification.

Will continue to pray for you,

    Craog

  4. Hey Craig,

Thank you for the prayers, still need them! How’s your dad doing?

I usually approx. only spend 20min per post, so do think I’m working too hard here πŸ˜‰ .

  5. I don’t know your heart or your conscitnce, but I don’t detect what you’re claiming here. There are far more caustic bloggers out there. Maybe I’m desensitized a bit, but I see somebody who has an alternate voice on a few things.

  6. Well, thank you, Steve!

Sometimes I may be a little over self-analytical, but I need it, sometimes πŸ˜‰ . Thank you for being a Barnabas (in spite of the fact that you said something about the Warriors, or other πŸ˜‰ ).
