What Book Impacted You Most in the Last Year?

Let me ask a question. Which book, in the last year, has had the greatest impact upon your theological/biblical/spiritual perspective? For me, I would have to say (and this might go back two years since I first read it, but I reread it in the last year) Thomas Torrance’s Scottish Theology: From John Knox to John McLeod Campbell. This book probably more than anything served as the impetus for this blog; along with an essay by Myk Habets, I first became aware of the language “Evangelical Calvinist” from Torrance in this book. But more than the language it’s the concepts that this language captures that is all important. Concepts such as theology proper, predestination, election, vicariousness, etc. These were concepts I struggled with for along time, thankfully Torrance, through surveying “Scottish Theology” was able to bring some resolution for me in these all important areas. One other book that complemented this book for me was another one by Torrance, his book Incarnation (okay, so that’s two books); “Incarnation” really developed some of the Torrance’s personal thought on the importance of the Incarnation on salvation (which often was only alluded to in “Scottish Theology”).

Anyway, what “one or two” books really impacted you this last year (and I mean spiritually/theologically) — besides the Bible (that’s understood)?

Since I’m in my first year of doctoral study, keeping that list to one or two is really hard, but mine definitely come from Torrance as well – Atonement and Divine Meaning, particularly the two chapters on Athanasius. I’m reading Scottish Theology right now, though quite slowly since I’m reading it along with three other books. Its awesome so far.

    Thanks for sharing, I really need to read Divine Meaning; that will have to be a book I get to this next year.
