The God of All Creation — Visible and Invisible

This is just a note, really. I’m reading through the Gospel of Mark tonight, and as we start in Mark 4:35 we come to Jesus and His disciples crossing the sea of Galilee; everything at first blush seems okay, Jesus is asleep the fisherman doing what they do (driving their boat), and all the sudden a storm rises. Now things aren’t okay, things are out of control; and being the experienced fisherman that the disciples were they knew this wasn’t just any storm, they realized that this storm was the “big one” — they were done! That is until Jesus woke up, and He simply rebuked the wind and sea; and the disciples were amazed, they realized they were in the presence of the God of creation.

Our next narrative step is to make it to shore where Jesus and His disciples were met by the demoniac. Again, the situation seems out of control, in fact the situation is out of control; humanly speaking, that is. As with the storm we see Jesus rebuke the demons that inhabited this poor man, and the demons obey; just as the storm obeyed Jesus — the God of creation.

Mark clearly is making a point, Jesus is sovereign Creator over all creation; whether that be visible (the storm) or invisible (the demons). Jesus was discipling His disciples. He was making clear who He is, the God that they were weaned on as they heard stories from the Torah in their youth.

This should provide great peace and confidence. No matter what trial you are faced with, God in Christ is sovereign over all creation (and He cares for us, for people, specifically). I find great solace in this description of events; this means that nothing is too difficult for the Lord. This further means, per the context, that Jesus cares for us; He loves us and takes care of us, and He has the power to implement that love in real ways — He is God of creation, or over creation!
