Back to Premil

Just a heads up, I’m still thinking through my millennial view; I am continuing to have problems with accepting the amil reading of Rev. 20. The Greek really supports a sequential reading in this context, not the recapitulating reading that the amil interp. requires. I am reading Robert Mounce’s excellent commentary on Revelation, wherein he offers, I would say, a historic premil reading of Revelation. I’m probably back to being premil, just not ardently dispensational; in other words I see much value in following the historic premil position.

I don’t know why I share this stuff with you guys, I only make myself out to be a laughingstock on this issue πŸ˜‰ ; but I suppose a blog is a primarily a place to think out loud, and that’s all I’ve ever really purported to do here (in the blogosphere, that is). I’m going to recant my amil status, once again (even though I see some value in their interpretations); and reassert my premil status, albeit estranged from my dispensational heritage — which doesn’t mean I don’t see a distinct place for the nation of Israel (the remnant) in the ‘last days’ (which we live in right now). Sorry amillers, you’re on your own (at least until next Tuesday or so πŸ˜‰ ).

P.S. If you haven’t dedicated much study to this issue, you may not realize how complicated some of the intracacies are; or maybe I’m just dense. I suppose I could’ve just stayed entrenched, and not opened myself up to the possibility of any other eschatological viewpoint other than dispensationalism; but I didn’t, so you get to wander around with me a bit as I work out my perspective. I think historic premil is most likely the most favored candidate — surely premil (finally because of the Greek and context of Revelation) is where I will live. Amil is a nice idea, but not one I can live with; especially understanding some of the historical forces that gave rise to it in the first place.

    I like that you are teachable. That speaks volumes.
    The Lord does not have me pinned down escatalogically. I was taught, and so lean toward pre-mil, some of it sounds gooky, like no-one can get saved during the trib. I have believed in a 7 year trib, but it’s ok if my teachers were wrong. The Lord will get us through it. There are countless thousands of Christians living under that devil in North Korea even as we speak. There is a good chance should the Lord tarry that America will collapse one day, and our great great grandchildren will be looking for sanctuary somewhere else.

    Like I said to Adam Nigh “I ain’t smart enough to discern what scripture I’m supposed to take at face value, and what I’m sposed to spiritualize.” That was about Samson. How the heck am I supposed to figure out what aint even happened yet?

    I do think premil is right, I’ve come to a compromise I think between dispy premil and amil in historic premil.

    It’s interesting, I’ve always been a strong premiller; opening up to amil a bit has been enlightening in some ways, and has certainly shaped the kind of premiller I am now — which is more open than I used to be.

  11. Thanks for being honest about your journey. None of us have complete and prefect understanding. I am a somewhat reformed, somewhat dispensational, premillenialist… sort of πŸ˜‰ .

    As you mentioned, the Greek supposedly supports Rev to be understood as it is written. The reformed people are crazy with their preterist view (some are more hard core than others). When has the info in Rev been totally fulfilled in history? Not yet!

    Reformed people also flip a pretty big switch for literal vs. symbolic interpretation. They also control when to flip the switch and when not to… pretty convenient for them.

    I like what John MacArthur said. The Bible interprets itself. Read it at face value. It becomes somewhat obvious what is literal and what is symbolic. Reformed people can make the mistake of forcing thier predetermined views upon what the text says.

    Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. I grow TULIPs in my garden also…
